INTRODUCTION

Before i started my photography career, I used to work full time in a food manufacturing business, after biding my time their for a few years i acknowledged that a career in food was not an accolade of mine.

Sitting at home for a few months brought nothing in the form of career opportunities and it was not until a friend from America
arrived that i took a giant step into pursuing a career in photography.
I had never shared an interest in photography before but i was inspired by my friends photographs and the scope of features available to enhance a simple photo.
A few months later and after money well spent on a camera and studio, i created a knack for photography ( especially portraits ) and i find myself travelling everywhere with my camera .
To further develop my photography skills i joined a college where i met other keen photographers and the following portfolio of photographs were taken by me as part of my first assignment.

I hope you enjoy them!

Intentions/purpose of the photography to be undertaken

Intention in photography is described as the photographers ability to express an opinion
or perspective on a given subject through the sequence, context and or collection of a group
of images. I plan to dedicate myself on the 17th March by taking a series of photographs of architecture in manchester city centre, I will be focusing on the contemporary buildings specifically those with less traditional design. I am presenting my finished work on the internet by posting it on my blog page.

Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others

I thought i would share my passion for contemporary and modern buildings with everybody and it seemed like a theme available with further scope to enhance the buildings to make them more interesting  Bearing in mind that images all have the ability to speak own their own, photographers like Iwan Baan
had the ability to produce images that some times had an enigmatic air to them, requiring a viewer to
analyze the image carefully, and consider the situation presented .

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why

I used my Nikon D800-slr and D70s-slr cameras, because it has give me the flexibility
to take the images that are required for this theme.
I choose digital photography as it is quicker and easier to process and manipulate in Nikon NX2 and Adobe elements 11 software, The images will be presented as electronic digital images. I am taking each photograph in Raw mode so i can change different elements. I am also using a 32gb SD flash card as it contains enough memory for 200 images.
I used three different lenses for this theme,
(1) Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1:2.8G ED
      (2) Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G ED
  (3) Sigma DG 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 Macro lense.
The photos will be taken during the day and in the late evening, i will be using a tripod for the night shots to ensure the stability of the camera to minimises the effects of camera shake as i will be using a slow shutter speed.

Techniques that will be used and how they will help convey the visual message.

I will be using many techniques, i am giving my preference to using the manual modes as i can tune the photographs to my liking but in some busy places i will switch to using priority modes as it is much more quicker and efficient when in a hurry. I am hoping to capture some very clean images of the buildings, The images used will need to reflect the key features of each building that demonstrate its age and the style of architecture, the photos will be taken from street level although some of the buildings which i will be photographing are high buildings, This perspective will convey the size and extent of the building.
Different shutter speeds and aperture will be varied for the time of the day and also for the different shots. I will use the Tripod sporadically mostly for the night photographs otherwise i prefer to use handheld for versatility. I want to take at least a couple of black and white photographs to see the result but i will be mostly focusing on using and enhancing colour within my photograph and pictures.

How light quality can be used to help convey the visual message.

I want to create a contemporary mood with fresh surroundings by taking a photograph of an interesting building with scope for enhancement and saturate its colours and finer the minor details. I will use natural light   and ambient lighting to help to make a contemporary mood. The time of the day will be varied, I will take at least a couple of  night photographs but i prefer taking photos within the day. All the photographs will be taken outdoors and i will use no diffusers and no reflectors. I will use the post processing manipulation technique and i will change the white balance settings regularly.

Safety consideration.

I will wear a rainproof body warmer as the British weather is unpredictable and rather cold. My footwear will be insulated and comfortable as i will be walking long distances in a cold weather. When taking photographs of the buildings the people with access to the building must be taken into consideration so that their pathway to the building is not obstructed. I will always be careful when taking photography and i will consider the area i am in and of my whereabouts being alert to any dangers around. I was with a friend when taking my photographs and we both exchanged mobile numbers incase of emergency. When handling my camera i used both hands and had a strap around my neck so it does not drop. I kept the lenses safe and clean and avoided any sharp objects. I had a bag to place my camera and all its contents in.

Eric de Mare

Eric de Maré (London, 1910-2002) was a British photographer and author, described as one of the greatest British architectural photographers. de Maré was born in London on the 10 September 1910, of Swedish parents, Bror and Ingrid de Maré. He was educated at St Paul’s School in London before becoming a student of the Architectural Association in 1928. Following graduation in 1933, he went to Scandinavia to travel and work. A number of his later publications focus on Sweden. On returning to England, he joined the Architectural Press and became the acting editor of the Architects Journal, in 1943. In 1942, de Maré had published his first book, titledBritain Rebuilt. The subsequent years saw the publication of further books and articles within the architectural press.
Canals and waterways feature significantly in de Maré’s work. In 1948, he boated a dozen of the English canals during a 600 mile tour, photographing the landscapes, buildings and people he encountered. This journey resulted in a 1949 article for the Architectural Review documenting canal life and buildings. The following year saw the publication of The Canals of England. The book provided an historical and technical description of inland waterways punctuated by de Maré’s photography.
In 1956, he was commissioned to travel throughout England to photograph early industrial sites and buildings. The resulting images were combined with JM Richard’s text in The Functional Tradition in Early Industrial Buildings, which was published by the Architectural Press in 1958. The functional tradition within architecture had received little attention from contemporary architects until this study, but the work coincided with and promoted an increased interest in the qualities of early industrial structures. His work in the 1960s reflected the other end of the industrial spectrum, focussing on modern power generation plants, to which his photographs frequently conferred a sculptural quality.
De Maré died on 22 January 2002, aged 91. The Guardian said that to most architects and architectural historians he was the finest architectural photographer of the mid-20th century. The Telegraph described him as one of the most notable photographers of his time, as well as a prolific author.

IWAN BAAN

born February 8, 1975 in Alkmaar is a Dutch architectural photographer who used unexpected perspectives to revive the traditionally static art of photographing structures. He studied at the royal academy of art in the hague and worked in publishing and documentary photographer in new york and europe . He has challenged a long-standing tradition of depicting buildings as isolated and static by representing people in architecture and showing the building's environment, trying "to produce more of a story or a feel for a project and "to communicate how people use the space". He has photographed buildings by many of the world's most pb prominent architects, including Rem koolhaas and  Toyo ito . He is "one of the most widely published" architectural photographers in the world. His candid "polysemic shots" have been compared to the work of  Diane Arbus In 2010, he won the first annual Julius Shulman Photography Award, named after the most famous architectural photographer of the 20th century. In 2012, he took the image of Manhattan after Hurricane Sandy that made the cover of  New York magazine—showing light above 42nd St. and darkness below that line—illustrating vividly the storm's disparate impact. It was later turned into a limited edition print sold to benefit Sandy's victims.

Nikon D800 dslr  Focal length 29 mm  Iso 400  Exposure time 1/15 sec  F-stop f/2.8  Ex-c +2.0ev

I taken this shot on the widest settings of my 24 70mm f2.8g lense, this is a wide aperture depth of field photograph.

I shot this photo in AF-S mode, and i used matrix mode. This photo uses composition framing and uses lines, form, pattern and shapes to stand out. A cold, crisp and beautiful night was the setting of this photograph, accompanying the mysterious skies were blocks of residential accommodation merged to form a blockbuster photograph. Adding extra crunch to the photo are the wintery, deciduous trees which are complemented by ambient lighting.

I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.

Picture 2

Nikon 70s dslr  Focal length 100 mm  Iso 200  Exposure time 1/320 sec  F-stop f/14  Daylight

This is a building in Salford quays. In this photograph i like the glass fascia that is an ongoing pattern all over the outer building,  The lines, shapes and pattern on this building really makes it look unique. By using composition viewpoint i chose my angle and my distance. Using aperture priority mode i controlled the shutter speeds and ISO whereas the camera calculated the distance. Because it is a still photograph, namely a building i used the focus mode AFS to focus the photograph.
I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.

I shot this photo in AF-S mode and i used matrix mode. It uses composition viewpoint. The photograph uses the elements lines, shapes, pattern and texture. The
The mixture of old and new compliments the picture very well and gives us character as well as a modern charm, almost identical in height the new building has a larger range of colours whereas the older building has been made using one sole colour scheme.

I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.

Picture 4

Nikon D800 dslr  Focal length 62 mm  Iso 100  Exposure time 1/200 sec  F-stop f/7.1  Daylight
I shot this photo in AF-S mode and in matrix mode, it also uses composition viewpoint. The photo uses lines, shapes, pattern, and texture. It has a shallow depth of field.
This is another picture which shares a old and new mixture within the buildings, the old buildings in the background are shadowed by the design of the new building. The shape of the new building is that of a unique flick which adds to the buildings image.

I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.

Picture 5

Nikon D800 dslr  Focal length 32 mm  Iso 100  Exposure time 1/125 sec  F-stop f/5.6  Daylight

This photo was shot in AF-S mode and uses matrix mode as well as composition viewpoint and framing. This photograph uses the elements lines, shapes, pattern, colour and texture.  The colour of grey may be the stand out feature within this photograph but in my opinion it is the grounds which the building is sat on that makes this picture special, the design of the grass areas which to me looks somewhat like a couple of snakes gives the building a presence and looks more commanding than other artifacts surrounding it.

I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.

Picture 6

Nikon D800 dslr  Focal length 70 mm  Iso 100  Exposure time 1/160 sec  F-stop f/6.3  Daylight

This photo was shot in programming mode. I shot this in AF-S mode and matrix mode. It uses composition viewpoint and framing and has the elements lines, shape, pattern, colour and texture. These buildings show us a modern, unique design with varied lines and patterns accommodating the photograph and the buildings.

I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.

I shot this in AF-S mode and spot mode. It uses composition viewpoint and framing and has the elements lines, shape, pattern. A mix of tall and small, both buildings bring modern character and a unique design.
I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.

Nikon D800 dslr  Focal length 60 mm  Iso 100  Exposure time 1/60 sec  F-stop f/14  Daylight

I shot this in AF-S mode and matrix mode. It uses composition viewpoint and has the elements lines, shape, pattern. This image is of a new building, it possesses loads of character and has a unique cone design, the cone is in a   aded grey colour and it definitely adds an extra bite into the picture. The sky was a clear rich blue that day and the clouds really contributed into making the skies looking beautiful.

I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.
Step 1  Exposure compensation ( change the exposure from 0 to 0 )

Nikon D70s dslr  Focal length 35 mm  Iso 200  Exposure time 1/500 sec  F-stop f/7.1  Daylight

I shot this in AF-S mode and matrix mode. It uses composition viewpoint and has the elements shape, pattern, colour. This picture is of the the Co-Operative Bank pyramids, this picture was taken from a side angle view to display two sides of the building, the blue tinted glass effect really enhances the building and makes this a stand out building from the rest in the area, the trees add some extra crunch to the picture and display some warmth, which is lacking from other photographs.

I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.
Step 1  Exposure compensation ( change the exposure from 0 to 0 )
Step 2 White balance ( Auto 5200 )

Picture 10

Nikon D800 dslr  Focal length 31 mm  (Iso 1ev under 100)  Exposure time 1/30s  F-stop f/22  Daylight

I shot this in AF-C mode and matrix mode. It uses composition  framing and has the elements form, pattern, colour. This is one of many rides that arrived to Piccadilly Gardens this year, one of the main reasons i took this photo was the rich in colour skies, along with the rides and the skies was the buildings that can be seen in the outline of the photograph, they make the background more interesting and really enhance the photograph.

I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.
Step 1  Exposure compensation ( change the exposure from 0 to 2.0 )

Picture 11

Nikon D800 dslr  Focal length 24 mm  Iso:1ev under 100  Exposure time 1/13s  F-stop f/22  Daylight

I shot this in AF-S mode and matrix mode. It uses composition viewpoint and has the elements lines, shape, pattern, form. The Mercure Hotel is a really unique design for a building, with many blocks and edges it was definitely a photo worth taking, the sky was crystal clear that day with minimalist clouds in sight, the building may be really modern but the picture does include some hidden character.

I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.
Step 1  Exposure compansation ( change the exposure from 0 to 1.0 )

Picture 12

Nikon D800 dslr  Focal length 48 mm  Iso 800  Exposure time 1/30 sec  F-stop f/2.8  Night

I shot this in AF-C mode and matrix mode. It uses composition viewpoint and has the elements lines, shape, pattern, colour and form. This is one of three pictures I took at night, in this photo we can see the whole building and not just one angle. the skies were mostly clear that night and the roads were quiet, this really makes the picture special and look professional. The street lights make the photograph look warm and welcoming.

I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.

Picture 13

Nikon D70s dslr  Focal length 135 mm  Iso 200  Exposure time 1/50s  F-stop f/14 Daylight

I shot this in dynamic mode and matrix mode. It uses composition viewpoint and framing and has the elements lines, shape, pattern, form and texture. This is my favourite picture out of all the photographs i have displayed, this is because the mixture of  the modern buildings, and the natural lighting coming from the skies really make this picture special. I have taken this picture from a distance so i can show the full scale of the beautiful sight.

I shot the image in raw mode. So I'll start the processing in the view NX2 software which comes with my Nikon dslr camera.

Some interesting shots here of a wide range of architecture in Greater Manchester. What is your aim? What are you trying to say with your images? Answer these questions to enable you to gain focus for your project. And, like I've said before, be aware of overuse of Photoshop as this can make the image look unnatural.

Your new shots give more quality to the overall portfolio - I particularly like the Imperial War Museum shot. However - if you have time - some of the pictures will benefit from being re-shot in more favourable weather conditions. Good work.
